Hi, I’m Helen from “Helen’s Hens”. I breed Heritage Hens (and Roosters) on some land in Rangiora, North Canterbury.

Most folks want some pretty hens for their coop that aren’t just your standard shaver brown. I’ve been breeding heritage hens since 2015. My father has been breeding them for a lot longer and I thought i would carry on his legacy.

Buff Orpington

$70 - $100

Big and beautiful the buffs are the queens of the coop. Gentle and non-aggressive, they make great pets for kids. Because they are passive birds, they do not do well in mixed flocks that include aggressive breeds, such as the Rhode Island Reds. They are relatively quiet birds that do well in city or suburban environments. Roosters of the species are unusually gentle.

Barred Rock

$70 - $100

Friendly with people, tame easily, and aren’t extremely aggressive with other chickens. These chickens are not known for picking fights with other birds in their flock, even different breeds. The chickens are a low-maintenance breed overall. They tolerate cold weather conditions and heat quite well and tend to lay consistently all year long. These docile and loving chickens prefer being kept in smaller flocks. They enjoy much more human interaction than other breeds.

Black Orpington

$70 - $100

The Orpington has a very docile and mellow temperament. They love to be petted and will quickly become lap chickens. Orpington’s seem to shake off the colder weather well, their dense, fluffy feathering keeps them toasty warm through all but the severest winters. They aren’t an overly fussy breed to work with – they don’t have special needs or requirements except for slightly lower perches as they are a heavy breed and may damage their legs coming off a high perch. I just love their fluffy bums.

Light Sussex

$70 - $100

The Sussex is a very striking chicken, alert, calm breed that can adapt to any surroundings and be quite tame and friendly. They are comfortable in both free range or confined spaces and in the presence of humans. The breed frequently goes broody in the warmer months. They are good foragers and are generally vigorous and hardy as a garden fowl.

Rhode Island Red

$70 - $100

Rhode Island Reds are the perfect breed for backyard chook keepers and lifestylers who want a laidback layer to add to their flock. These hens are renowned for their hardiness in any type of environment. They also possess a lot of heart! They will be following you around the property waiting for you to dig up something yummy in no time.

Mixed Farmhouse Breeds are also available $35 - $70

I have recently moved to ten acres, a part of our family farm on the outskirts of Rangiora, the land was my grandparents, my fathers, now ours. It is the perfect place to expand my hobby in breeding and raising chickens.

I have only been raising chickens for a few years now even though my Father was a breeder, judge and poultry enthusiast for most of my life. My children always chose a pet chicken and looked after it and Grandad put them in the shows for them. Many ribbons were won. Chicken baths and drying chickens with the hair dryer and chickens perched around the log fire drying off before shows was common.

I started off with a few Shaver Browns for eggs, then when I had too many eggs I sold them from the gate and it snowballed from there. I bred my own shaver cross from a rooster Dad gave me, the aim being to get a hardier layer that lived a bit longer. I ended up selling a lot of these cross breeds, one buyer said he still had some of my crossbreeds after going through two lots of Shavers.

I then ventured to some heritage breeds as my Father obtained some Buff Orpingtons that he helped breed up. A beautiful golden big friendly bird, such fluffy bums - I love them. I took them off his hands and hope to keep the breed going. Then we got some eggs from a Black Orpington breeder with the purpose of gifting them to my Sister In Law who seems to collect black and white pets. Then the craziness began. I got Light Sussex as a workmate loved them and kept asking my Dad to breed him some so I took the few hens he had and obtained a beautiful rooster and so on…

My customers are mainly backyard or lifestylers who want a pretty hen.

All the photos are of my hens, present and past.
